Join our Volunteer Program

After a visit to Kaliandra, many of our guests often tell us how they wish they could stay longer – immersing into the Javanese way of life – its slow, relaxed pace exempt from the stresses and strains of modern life, to become one of our Kaliandra family! For this reason, we created our volunteer program, accepting volunteers from around the world to offer their skills, ideas and expertise in order to help develop and expand our current product development and aid us in our community development initiatives. Our volunteers return home with a feeling of personal achievement, a more diverse understanding of the local Javanese and Maduranese people and the knowledge of having been a beneficial part to our developing community.

Our very successful annual volunteer program from Leeds Metropolitan University, England has seen groups of 20 students and teachers visit us with many academic and practical backgrounds. The volunteers have experiences in International Tourism, Hospitality Management, Marketing, Teaching, Product Design and many others. The joint venture with this University has also given us the opportunity to send one of our own Kaliandra family members there on a scholarship provided by the University to study a Masters program in Responsible Tourism in the renowned International Centre for Responsible Tourism.

We also enjoy the company of an annual volunteer group from the University of Indonesia, Jakarta whose backgrounds are in the medical profession and help us with our community health programs alongside our own volunteer doctors.

What can You provide?

We are very eager to accept your help if you have experiences and skills in any of the following areas. However, if you have knowledge in other sectors which you think could be applied to Kaliandra, then please let us know and we would be more than happy to consider them.

  • Environmental Conservation
  • Education and teaching
  • English teaching (to local communities and staff)
  • Community development
  • Hotel management and Hospitality
  • Eco-tourism / Responsible tourism / Sustainable tourism
  • Organic farming and Agriculture (Sustainable methods)
  • Sustainable development
  • Human Resources and staff training development
  • International Marketing and Relations
  • Program development in Outdoor Activities (Outward Bound)
  • Green / Eco-friendly technology
  • Information & Communication Technology
  • And many more…!

We encourage our volunteer visitors to stay as long or as short as they see suitable to make a difference. Often volunteering is a very intimate thing and many seek some fulfillment in their lives, knowing they have made a difference before they move on. Some may therefore choose to stay for 4 or 5 weeks, others 4 or 5 months. However, because we do not charge for our volunteers to stay here, we do ask for a minimum volunteer duration of ??? to ensure that your work and efforts make a difference!

What will We provide?

In return for your precious help and time here in Kaliandra, you will receive accommodation in either dorm style rooms or a house in one of the nearby villages with other Kaliandra family members (depending on your length of stay). We will also provide you with organic healthy meals everyday where you will eat with the rest of our Kaliandra family.

As well as this, your experiences both in and away from work will be much different than that of a general holiday. You will enjoy life as the locals enjoy life, visit places that the locals visit and make friends with the local's friends!
