Leeds Met University UK and Universitas Indonesia Volunteers - July/August 2007
Our annual volunteers from Leeds Met UK and UI, have just completed another year and left a lasting positive impression both at Kaliandra and in the surrounding villages. As well as helping here with marketing, ecotourism, program development, english-speaking and community programs, the group also constucted two large playgrounds at schools in Dayurejo and Jatiarjo. One of the international volunteers, Andy Kirkman, stayed with us until November to help design our new website and assist in marketing and ecotourism developments. Thank you to all and we anticipate next year's volunteer groups!

Sweet Friday "Jumat Legi"
Once every month, Kaliandra invites groups from our local communities to meet and discuss the traditions are ??? of Javanese culture. Young and old members alike come to our Center where the senior communityy members will share their great knowledge of this age-old culture in order to preserve the local customs of language, traditional arts and music. The older members can be heard singing the 'Macapat' to their listeners and then talk about the philosophies behind such songs. Talking about the environmental from Javanese culture point of view.

With a recent proposal to the World Conservation Union, Kaliandra hopes to facilitate a propserous large-scale project to induce responsible tourism to the Mount Arjuna Area starting next year. The project aims to develop sustainable tourism promoting micro-enterprise in the surrounding nine villages through activities such as trek-guiding, homestay providers, village familiarisation tours, food and support services. We will update you when we have news from IUCN.
