Here at Kaliandra, we provide a number of excursions for you to discover and explore the natural and cultural jewels of East Java which you may otherwise have missed. Our guides have much knowledge and experience in the destinations you will visit and are eager to share this with you to ensure you have an enjoyable trip. Our expeditions are charged additional to your accommodation in Kaliandra and must be booked in advance of your arrival. Arjuna & Welirang Mountain Trek (3 days)

"...a world above the clouds..."

The ultimate in our hikes is a 3-day trek climbing Mount Arjuna, wandering through many habitats and ascending through numerous ecosystems. After your first days' hike, setup camp just a few hours below the summit and enjoy the wilderness around you - and a kind of silence not found in the city!

When you awake, witness the breath-taking sunrise over the Tengger mountain range before you continue your climb, reaching the summit of the mountain at 3339m a few hours later and looking down on a soft, white blanket of cloud concealing the world below. Gaze towards the regularly erupting Mount Semeru in the distance before traversing the mountain ridges towards the still active Mount Welirang and its sulphur mine.

After your second nights' camp, this time on Welirang, a descent down the far side of the mountain will bring you finally to a natural hot-spring heated by the thermals of the mountain itself where you may relax and unwind the strained muscles from your 15 km hike.

Pekalen-Bromo Expedition (2 days)

"...from river to crater..."

A rafting adventure suitable for complete beginners to experienced veterans with 'Songa Adventure'. Brace yourself for the many rapids as you race down the 12km of the lower Pekalen river. The months of January and February see this Grade 2 adventure transform into a mid- to high-ability raging torrent!

On arrival at Songa you will be grouped with an experienced and qualified rafting instructor who will equip you with industry-standard life-vest, safety helmet and paddle. A memorable 20 minute transfer will take the groups upstream to the beginning of the lower river and the start of your journey through rapids, swimming lagoons and even the opportunity to brave the 7 meter jump from an overhead bamboo bridge.

After lunch at Songa, you will head to the Tengger-Bromo-Semeru mountain region for your next escapade! The smoking Mount Bromo is an iconic attraction in East Java along with close-up views of Java's highest volcano, Mount Semeru and should not be missed! A remarkable trip into this mountain region will bring you to the very edge of the immense caldera, once the vast crater for a super-volcano!

Arriving at your destination in the late afternoon/early evening, you will enjoy dinner in the hotel's restaurant before early retirement ready for the 3am start the next day.

You may choose to walk the moderate two-hour hike from your accommodation up Mount Pananjakan with your Kaliandra guide or take a Jeep directly to the top (additional charge). Whether you choose to walk or go by vehicle, you will arrive to behold the breathtaking sunrise over the vast landscape and see the smoldering ‘Gunung Bromo' come to life as the morning sun engulfs the caldera. Cast your eyes towards Mount Semeru in the distance and wait for the silent explosion of smoke and sulphur – along with the gasps of amazement from fellow visitors at the towering plume.

If by Jeep, the descent back down the mountainside and to the caldera will stop at Mount Bromo itself where you may walk across the desert-like landscape and climb the 200 something steps for inspiring views deep into the volcano's crater. The rest of the morning is then free for you to explore, walk the full length of the caldera or maybe rent a bicycle and discover the surrounding area until lunch time after which you will head back to Kaliandra.

Sempu Island Adventure (2 days)

"...back to the REAL nature..."

A back-woods adventure trip for those desiring a return to nature and complete isolation from modern civilisation, living amongst the sounds of wildlife and waves by night on this uninhabited island and by day, maybe a passing fellow visitor or two.

After a three-hour journey then a quick stop at the famous fish market in Sendang Biru to buy fresh seafood for dinner, a short boat ride will drop you with your Kaliandra guide at the awe-inspiring ‘Pulau Sempu'. You will then begin a fairly easy one-hour hike through the jungle, listening to the squabbling Macaques and the exotic birds in the trees. If you are lucky, you may even here the thundering sound of the hornbill's wings as it flies overhead the canopy. Soon arriving at your first camp, take a moment to admire what many of our guests have described as “a scene from The Beach, but in Indonesia” – a fine, white sand beach bordering a clear, blue salt-water lake surrounded by towering jagged cliffs and hidden caves only to be discovered when the tides have retreated.

As the tents are erected, others will collect wood from the neighbouring jungle ready to build the fire for dinner before relaxing on your deserted beach or snorkeling in the lake to marvel at the vast tropical marine fish. Your chosen seafood dinner will be cooked traditional back-woods camping style and prepared with fresh salad vegetables collected from our organic gardens in Kaliandra.

After an early morning breakfast on your second day , watch as the ocean's tide fills back into the bay to form the lake which emptied overnight. You will soon be hiking again through the jungle towards many other beaches on the island or if you decide you may choose to wait a little longer to relax on this, your deserted beach, until the lake allows you to swim and snorkel once more.
