Community Empowerment

Since 1997 Kaliandra has been developing alternative practical education programs to empower local people of Dayurejo and Jatiarjo Village. It aims to develop the wellness of local people who dwell in forest buffer zone. The programs that using cultural approachment is focused on sustainability of conservation efforts in Mount Arjuna area, specifically Grand Forest Park R. Soerjo.

Kaliandra has managed some of educational programs in terms of organic agriculture, agroforestry management, hygiene awareness, curriculum development based on local competency, and rejuvenate indigenous knowledge. Until now Kaliandra has facilitated initiation of local organizations as well, such as: Forestry Villagers Organization (Lembaga Masyarakat Desa Hutan), Forestry Farmer Association (Kelompok Tani Tahura), Organic Farmer Association (Kelompok Tani Organik), Youth Association (Kelompok Swadaya Masyarakat), Learn and Playgroup for Children (Kelompok Bermain dan Belajar), Women Association (Kelompok Perempuan) and Local Culture Forum (Kelompok Dono Wareh).
Those organizations have a similar aim to conserve water resource based on local wisdoms.

In 2008, altogether with villagers of forest buffer zone in Pasuruan District, Kaliandra will develop the concept of environmental service compensation, ecotourism, village library, organic farming, and assistance for teachers. Kaliandra has been also creating network with organizations who has commitment in empowering community. Some of Kaliandra's partners are as follow: Environmental Service Program (ESP), Leeds Metropolitan University, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Benih Matahari (BIMA esw), Golden Leaf, Bioland, Integrated Pest Control Farmer Association (IPPHATI), Management of Grand Forest Park (Balai Tahura), National Forestry Company (Perhutani) and Pasuruan District Department of Environmental Monitoring (Bapedalda).
